HelpOki has selected our new Queen for a Day. If your unfamiliar with what Queen for a Day is, it’s a day where we award a mother, we feel most deserving of being rewarded with what she asks for (within a certain price range). In the past, we were able to help a mother terminal with cancer have a day of being pampered while we took her two beautiful daughter ice skating, batting cages, sushi for lunch and bowling. When we met with her, we got a chance to talk to her, hear her heroic story of being a domestic violence survivor and now has cancer. She requested the things above and we were able to grant her every wish.

HelpOki は、新しい Queen for a Day を選出しました。

  • HelpOki has selected our new Queen for a Day. If your unfamiliar with what Queen for a Day is, it’s a day where we award a mother, we feel most deserving of being rewarded with what she asks for (within a certain price range). Last month we were able to help a mother terminal with cancer have a day of being pampered while we took her two beautiful daughter ice skating, batting cages, sushi for lunch and bowling. When we met with her, we got a chance to talk to her, hear her heroic story of being a domestic violence survivor and now has cancer. She requested the things above and we were able to grant her every wish.

This quarters “Queen for a Day” is a single mother who grew up in the orphanage since she was born. She was soon living with a foster family after being placed in an orphanage at birth but was given back to the orphanage on Okinawa’s Miyako Island. She lived in the orphanage on Miyako Island until she was 15 years old (finishing junior high school [middle school]). After turning 15, she went to mainland Japan to work as on an internship and soon after met her ex-husband. After getting married her marriage took a dark turn. She became a domestic violence survivor after 10 years of being in an abusive relationship. She now has four children (2 boys and 2 girls) who are between the ages of 7-12.

She is currently unable to work due to trying to mentally recover from the trauma she received for many years and is trying to rebuild her life for her and her children.  When asked what she would like, she said she would like a new Japanese women’s bicycle for her, and a new Japanese bicycle for her children to use. When asked if a car would be helpful for her to have so she could get around, she said that she currently receives government assistance, and the government doesn’t allow someone who is receiving government assistance money to have a car.

Her goals are to be able to get a job and to stop needing government assistance so she can someday get a car and help her children have a better life. Also, because she receives government assistance her children are limited on what schools they can attend here in Okinawa. In Japan, a child can go to any high school they wish if they receive a certain score on their high school entrance exam (hence why cram schools are so popular with junior high school students). The better the score the better the high school they can attend, then the better college they can attend, and the better job they can apply for.

We were able to give her a month’s supply of food, clothing for her children and 10,000 yen in HelpOki store credit so she can use the instore credit to continue to buy clothing for her or her children as needed.  Her dream job would be to work in the food industry or helping deliver food to those in need.  We plan to present new toys for her children for Christmas.

We wanted to reach out to you our amazing supporters to see if anyone would like to make a monetary donation to help us purchase her the two bikes requested (or if a unit, family, or individual would like to purchase them).  We will hope to present her with the two bikes by the end of November.  The bikes cost around 250,000 yen each. Thank you for supporting our cause and making a difference in the local community.
